Are Notaries Public the same as Justices of the Peace?

The quick answer is below

Notaries Public are different because Notaries are authorised by their commission to certify and otherwise deal with documents that are for use overseas in countries all over the world.  On the other hand JP’s and Commissioners for Declarations are authorised to witness and certify documents for use within Australia only.

Notaries Public also charge fees for their services but Justice’s of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations are not permitted to charge for their services.  Australian notaries are all lawyers and charge fees similar or the same as their usual fees for legal work.

If you want to use a document overseas DON’T use the services of a Justice of the Peace or other Australian authorised persons.  Only a Notary Public can provide those services.
